The 12 iaido seitei kata

These are the 12 basic 'kata' (forms) practised in iaido.

Every kata includes the following 4 elements:
• 'Nukitsuke' - a drawing cut.
• 'Kirioroshi' - a downward cut.
• 'Chiburi' - blood removal from the sword blade.
• 'Noto' - re-sheathing the sword.

The kata

1. Mae ('Front')
Kneeling start. x1 attacker from front.

2. Ushiro ('Rear')
Kneeling start. x1 attacker from behind.

3. Uke Nagashi ('Flowing block')
Kneeling start. x1 attacker from left side.

4. Tsuka Ate ('Handle strike')
Crouching start. x1 attacker from front, x1 attacker from behind.

5. Kesa Giri ('Diagonal Cut')
Standing start. x1 attacker from front.

6. Morote Tsuki ('2-Handed Thrust')
Standing start. x1 attacker from front, x1 attacker from behind.

7. Sanpo Giri ('3-Direction Cut')
Standing start. x3 attackers from left, right and front.

8. Gan Men Ate ('Face Strike')
Standing start. x1 attacker from front, x1 attacker from behind.

9. Soete Tsuki ('Reinforced Thrust')
Standing start. x1 attacker from left side.

10. Shiho Giri ('4-Direction cut')
Standing start. x4 attackers from all 4 corners.

11. Sougiri ('Complete Cuts')
Standing start. x1 attacker from front.

12. Nukiuchi ('Sudden Attack')
Standing start. x1 attacker from front.
